MomentBackup vs Time Machine
Short version: if all you own is a Mac, Time Machine is excellent and free. MomentBackup earns its place the moment you also have a Windows or Linux machine, want an off-site copy protected by supported S3 Object Lock, or want to actually know your backup has been tested. On a Mac, the two are happy together.
Where Time Machine shines
- It's free and built into macOS — nothing to install.
- Effortless: hourly local snapshots and the famous "go back in time" browser.
- Whole-machine restore through macOS Recovery is first-class.
We're not here to talk you out of it. MomentBackup can even watch your Time Machine backups and tell you whether they're configured, recent, and healthy.
Where MomentBackup goes further
- Every computer, not just Macs. The same go-back-in-time file history works on Windows and Linux too — one app for the whole household.
- An off-site copy protected from rewrites. A local Time Machine drive can be encrypted or wiped by ransomware, and it offers no off-site option. With a provider and bucket that support S3 Object Lock, MomentBackup can keep an immutable copy that rejects early deletion.
- Restores you can check. MomentBackup verifies backups automatically. For local and mounted backups, it can also run a safe restore drill and show when a real restore last worked.
- Your keys, portable. End-to-end encryption with a recovery key you hold; restore on another supported computer. Local or mounted backups can be restored offline. Restores are never license-gated.
- Bring any File History destination. Local disk, NAS, Google Drive, or an S3-compatible bucket — and it coexists on the very same NAS share as Time Machine, in its own space.
- Whole-computer recovery on Windows. System images on a local or external drive, or a connected NAS, and whole-machine restore to a replacement drive.
They work together
On a Mac, MomentBackup doesn't replace Apple Recovery for full-machine restore — it covers your files with portable encryption and an optional locked off-site copy, and keeps an eye on Time Machine's health. Run both: Time Machine for instant local history, MomentBackup for the off-site, cross-platform, verified layer.
